Is Your Garage Ready for Summer?

Joy Foundry Garage Shelving!

For many families, the garage becomes the catch-all space for everything that doesn't quite have a home. Sports equipment, gardening supplies, seasonal decorations, half-finished projects, and boxes of "I'll deal with it later" can quickly take over.

The good news is - the garage can be handled the same as the rest of your house. We use the KonMari method to decide what you want in your garage and what can move along.

  1. Consolidate Like Items: Bring all items from a category together in one location. If you are overwhelmed, start small. A category could be outdoor kids toys, coolers, yard equipment….etc. When we consolidate all like items you see how many of the items you have and can better judge the ones you like or need.

  2. Joy Check: Keep with confidence or let go with gratitude. Just like everything in our homes, we out grow garage items, change hobbies and need to declutter. Do you still enjoy the item? Is it actively used? Would you buy it again?

  3. Let Go with Gratitude: Your next step is donation planning or consign and sell! If it doesn’t bring you joy - think of the joy a young family getting new toys or a new home owner stocking their new garage.

  4. Organize & Store: Store like items together, create consistency in storage. If you do your garage once using this method you will be set for a long time if you keep like things together. The gardening tools stay together, tools in one spot and toys in their buckets. If you organize & store this way - you never have to worry about opening the garage doors in spring again.

  5. Donate: Spark joy for someone else! The final step is to make sure you have donated or listed on a marketplace all the items that should move out. Try to do same day so you don’t forget or don’t complete this step!
