Legacy Decluttering - Why Start Now?
Many people wait until a move, a health change, or another major life event forces them to declutter. But the best time to begin is before it's urgent.
Starting early means you can:
Make thoughtful decisions without pressure.
Take your time reliving the memories rather than feeling rushed.
Preserve family stories and memories.
Reduce the amount your loved ones will someday need to sort through.
Enjoy a home that is easier to maintain and more enjoyable to live in today.
One of the biggest mistakes people make with Legacy Decluttering is starting with the most sentimental items in their household. These are often items in a collection, passed down from generation to generation, or simply things you have put off dealing with the longest. While your intentions are amazing, I am here to tell you: please don’t start there. You haven’t tackled these items yet for a reason—they're going to be really hard!
We first need to build up your momentum and get some wins under your belt with other, less sentimental categories. This could be clothing, jackets, books, office supplies, etc. Pick something you know could use a little paring down and follow the KonMari Method.
Consolidate Items: Bring all items from a category together in one location.
Joy Check: Does the item bring you joy? If yes, keep with confidence. If no, let go with gratitude.
Let go with Gratitude: Decide where to donate or consign and sell. See my Twin Cities Resource page for more ideas.
Organize & Store: Store like items together, create consistency in storage.
Donations: Spark joy for someone else!
Once you have a few “easier” categories under your belt, try a collection, family heirlooms….etc. If they don’t go smoothly - that is ok. Try another category with less sentimental attachment and keep working to hone what brings you joy. If you need help, I am here!
