Nostalgic Decluttering

The sentimental category is always the hardest part of organizing. There’s something about the past - the memories and what those objects represent - that makes it difficult. However, it’s important to remember: it is just that - a representation of a memory.

Nostalgic purges are the last KonMari category in the tidying process because you’re not just sorting objects — you’re sorting identity, memory, and seasons of life.

At Joy Foundry, there are two important things to remember when approaching nostalgic decluttering.

#1 — I don’t believe in ruthless purging. I believe in:

  • Telling the story of the object and honoring its place in your life

  • Keeping a few meaningful pieces

  • Letting go of the excess

  • Making space for who you are now

You don’t need to keep every photo, concert ticket stub, or figurine to honor your story. Sometimes one item (or even a photo of the item) — beautifully stored or displayed — holds the memory just as well.

#2 — You never start your tidying, downsizing, or purge with sentimental items

You begin organizing with a category that has less personal attachment (like clothing or paperwork) so you can practice identifying what truly brings you joy. Once you’ve identified what you love, it becomes easier to review sentimental categories and separate what YOU genuinely cherish from what you simply inherited or feel obligated to keep.
